The auto-dimming rearview mirror uses two ambient light sensors to detect glare from headlights on other cars. The mirror then uses a process called electrochromism to darken the mirror. This is done by releasing a dark gel between the two layers of glass that make up the rearview mirror. Once light is no longer detected, the gel is removed to return the mirror back to its normal state.
This process happens almost instantly to ensure your eyes are never exposed to headlight glare. It also allows you to keep your eyes on the road as you drive around Lakewood instead of constantly flipping a switch back and forth on the rearview mirror.
