You probably have a vehicle that has an automatically-dimming rearview mirror installed, but do you really understand how this technology works? Most people take this safety and convenience feature for granted. Let's take a look at how the auto-dimming rearview mirror functions each day.

When the mirror is constructed, it is made with two panes of glass that have an electromagnetic gel running between the layers. A very low current of electricity will be able to pass through this gel as the mirror changes its level of dimming.

As your mirror senses any kind of glare from behind your vehicle, the mirror will dim. The amount of electricity passing through the mirror will change, based on the level of glare that is detected. You typically have a button that you can press if you want to turn off the dimming feature.
